I worked and practice this art for the last 30 years from 1992. While naturopathic medicine grew out of an alternative healing system of the 18th and 19th centuries, it traces its philosophical roots to the famous Hippocrates, one of the first naturalistic doctors in recorded history.
“Ultimately, the entire universe has to be understood as a single, undivided whole, in which analysis into separately and independently existent parts has no fundamental status.”
~David Bohm, physicist
Naturopathic Medicine is a system of “health-oriented” medicine, focusing on prevention and treating the person as a whole, as opposed to treating the body as a structure with individual parts and where the body, the mind, spirit and its environment are separate entities. It is science based, and the philosophy of naturopathic treatments is threefold: first, do no harm; second, co-operate with the healing power of nature as the organism has the inherent capacity to heal itself in the proper therapeutic milieu; third, identify and treat the cause.
Established in 1900, it is a system of medicine that incorporates many modalities of treatment such as homeopathy, herbal and nutritional medicine, lifestyle counselling, and detoxification programs. It has been recognised by law in B.C. since 1935 and many extended health plans help to cover naturopathic services.
Naturopathic doctors (NDs) are the general practitioners of natural medicine. NDs must complete three years of pre-medical training and four years full time at an accredited naturopathic college.
